Introduction: Emotional intelligence and work satisfaction are fundamental aspects that nurses must cultivate, which would allow them to perceive not only their own emotions, but also those of patients and their relatives. This is basic to establish positive therapeutic relationships, as well as to develop actions that reinforce their self-worth and self-satisfaction with work done. Objective: To describe the relationship between emotional intelligence and work satisfaction in nurses from a regional hospital. Methods: Quantitative and cross-sectional study, with a descriptive-correlational design, carried out with 51 nurses from Julio Pinto Manrique Regional Hospital, of the National Police of Peru, in Arequipa. By means of a survey, the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) and the NTP 394 General Job Satisfaction Scale were applied. The information was analyzed using absolute frequencies and percentages. For the bivariate analysis, the chi-square test was used when the normality requirement was met, with a level of statistical significance of P < 0.05. Results: Of the nurses studied, 64.29 percent with moderate work satisfaction presented adequate emotional intelligence; 12.50 percent nurses with moderate dissatisfaction presented low emotional intelligence; 58.34 percent of civilian nurses with moderate work satisfaction presented adequate emotional intelligence; and 40 percent with indifferent work satisfaction presented low emotional intelligence. Conclusions: Among the nurses studied (whether certified or civilian), adequate emotional intelligence and moderate work satisfaction were found, with a significant relationship between these variables, which allowed to verify that they could management their own emotions adequately, as well as the emotions of others, when work satisfaction in the nurses was better(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stress affects U.S. healthcare workers (HCWs) and costs US$191 billion annually. About 30% to 50% of healthcare providers report burnout. Based on an assessment of a U.S. rural hospital system, 94% of workers experienced negative health consequences. We conducted a quality improvement (QI) project for the purpose of implementing a stress management program for HCWs in a hospital system. METHODS: A total of 500 HCWs were informed of the program through hospital communication channels. Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) process, we screened workers presenting to the occupational health clinic for care. Project team members recruited other workers for stress screening throughout the organization. Interventions included contacting workers with elevated scores on the Perceived Stress Survey (PSS; N = 213). The nurse practitioner scheduled them for a shared-decision-making (SDM) appointment (N = 33) where workers were informed of and encouraged to participate in stress reduction activities. Surveys were used to assess effectiveness of SDM appointments and the stress reduction activities. After each 2-week PDSA cycle, interventions were adjusted. FINDINGS: Of the 42% (N = 213) of workers who were screened for stress, 24% (n = 52) had elevated scores. Fifty percent (n = 26) completed an SDM appointment. Participants reported an 86% assurance level that they would use personalized stress management plans. Participants utilizing the interventions (n = 271) reported 25% to 72% reduced stress levels. CONCLUSIONS/APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: This successful project, in a rural setting, included workers across job classifications. Team engagement, PSS screening, SDM opportunities, and stress management activities were project strengths. This low-cost project can be replicated.

RESUMO

Background: Social media, an online vehicle for communication and media sharing, is a growing phenomenon in many aspects of everyday life, including health care. We explored the ways occupational health nurses can use social media as a helpful resource as well as identified potential concerns associated with its use. Methods: A review of the literature was conducted between December 1, 2019, and April 10, 2020, using PubMed and Google Scholar. Key search terms included social media, social network, nurse or nursing, occupational health, and online health. Criteria for selection included studies with results on social media within health care, nursing, and/or occupational health. Studies were also included if the health effects of social media were addressed. Six additional studies that had been previously identified by hand searching were included. Findings: These findings support the use of social media in occupational health for encouraging participatory health care among employees. Occupational health nurses can also utilize social media for health information, online health communities, emergency communication, health education workshops, professional connections, and continuing education. However, awareness of safe social media practice is necessary due to the possibility of misinformation and privacy breaches. Conclusion/Application to Practice: Social media can be used for education and communication with employees and is a way to support employees with specific health conditions through participation in online health communities . Occupational health nurses can take advantage of the speed and accessibility of social media to reach large numbers of employees. It is also a useful tool for addressing many health concerns encountered by employees; however, careful sourcing of information, awareness of company policies, and other safe practices can help to ensure it is helpful and not harmful.

RESUMO

Background: A drug-free workplace program (DFWP) has been shown to be effective in reducing workers' drug misuse. The purpose of this project was to determine the need and capacity for a new or enhanced DFWP in a large health system. If determined to be needed, the next step would be to develop, implement, and evaluate a toolkit to assist occupational health nurses to promote a new or enhanced DFWP. Methods: A strategic prevention framework was used to assess the need and capacity for a toolkit to prepare occupational health nurses to promote a new or enhanced DFWP. The project was conducted in the occupational health services department at a large health system in the Midwest U.S. occupational health nurses and employee assistance counselors in the hospital system completed a survey assessing the need and capacity for a new or enhanced DFWP. Findings: A gap was identified in the perceived effectiveness of training about DFWP and current DFWP components. The findings reflect the need and capacity for a DFWP toolkit. Optimally, a DFWP toolkit would include evidence-based drug and alcohol screening tools. We found that a toolkit for occupational health nurses to promote a new or enhanced DFWP in the project site was warranted. Conclusion/Application to practice: A DFWP can be an effective method of promoting workplace health and safety. Occupational health nurses can contact state and national representatives to encourage monitoring of drug-related work injuries to provide evidence to influence health policies to support effective DFWPs.

RESUMO

This study aimed to quantitatively grasp the structure of support for balancing cancer treatment and work among occupational health nurses (OHNs) with the current implementation status. The anonymous questionnaire was designed based on the findings of our previous qualitative study and distributed to OHNs. The degrees of support implementation for workers with cancer, superiors and colleagues, and human resource managers were assessed for each item. Factor analysis of support items was conducted, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test was carried out to compare the support scores between the factors. Support for workers with cancer comprised six factors in which the factor, concerning the provision of information regarding resources inside and outside the company, showed the lowest score. Support for superiors and colleagues was divided into three factors, and that for human resource managers comprised two factors. By Mann-Whitney's U-test, it was found that OHNs, who worked without full-time occupational health physicians for smaller companies, showed significantly higher implementation for several support factors, such as support to human resource managers. This study revealed the structure as well as implementation status of OHNs' support for balancing cancer treatment and work, which will provide suggestions for developing training programs for OHNs to promote these activities.

RESUMO

Background: Employees in the Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital experience psychological stress from caring for vulnerable veteran populations. Evidence suggests that mindfulness meditation decreases stress in health care employees and military personnel. The purpose of this worksite program was to explore the acceptability of a mindfulness meditation program among VA workers. Methods: Chaplain residents developed the "Promoting Spiritual Healing by Stress Reduction Through Meditation" (Spiritual Meditation) program for employees in a VA hospital. To evaluate acceptability, a 13-multiple-choice-item survey with an open-ended question was administered after the intervention. Descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis were performed. Findings: In 29 participants, 70% to 100% agreed with positive statements for the personal learning experience, program components, teacher quality, time to practice, and place to practice. Two categories emerged from qualitative responses: "positive practical experience of Spiritual Meditation" and "perceived values from Spiritual Meditation." Conclusion/Application to Practice: Occupational health nurses are uniquely positioned to lead and collaborate with chaplains to deliver Spiritual Meditation in their workplace setting.

RESUMO

Background: Uncontrolled blood loss is a primary source of preventable death after injury. Workplace injuries and fatalities are common, with most occurring in the agricultural/fishing/forestry/hunting or transportation/warehousing industries. Stop the Bleed (STB) training provides instruction on application of bleeding control methods to injured persons and is available to the general public. Method: We provided an overview of high-risk injury industries that could benefit from STB training. We also provided a review of the application of STB training and bleeding control methods in occupational settings with an emphasis on the role of the occupational health nurse. Findings: Suggested guidelines for occupational health nurses and employees in occupational settings who may respond to injured colleagues are provided. Implications for occupational health nurses are reviewed, including implementing STB training in the workplace and obtaining/storing bleeding control supplies. Resources for STB training, purchasing and storing bleeding control supplies, and general emergency response information are provided. Conclusions/application to practice: Occupational health nurses play a crucial role in emergency response in the workplace and have the ability to drive the implementation of STB training in their institution. Occupational health nurses often work in isolation or in small teams and serve as a primary resource for treatment of injured employees. Implementation of STB training for all employees is highly recommended given the limited availability of occupational health nurses in large or rural settings. Such training may reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with workplace injuries.

Abstract 21. The objective of this article was identify and characterize the instruments used in occupational health internationally, with the purpose of collecting relevant information regarding dimensions according to the characteristics of the results obtained. An integrative revision of available scientific literatura was performed including 6 databases, as a means to identify the assessment instruments used in occupational health during the period 2012 - 2017. From the above, 61 instruments used in occupational health research were obtained, from the triangulation of which 5 dimensions were reached: psychosocial - working conditions and capability - risk factors and disease detection - self-esteem, empowerment, motivation - quality of life. Due to the great number of instruments found, the contribution of this article is the compilation, characterization and grouping of the information into dimensions according to characteristics and subjects of study, in such a way as to offer guidance to the professional nurse aiming to carry out research on this particular matter. Great challenges in this field are both to stimulate the curiosity towards research with a higher ambition for scientific evidence, and the research regarding workers on a day-to-day basis as, without a shred of doubt it is thus that we can make our work visible to society.

From 1953, with the appearance of the Company Occupational Health Technical Assistant Specialist, until 2005, with the recognition of the specialty of Occupational Health Nursing, socio-cultural and technological changes have determined the evolution of work, its processes and conditions, but have also specified the occupational risks to which workers are exposed, as well as how to organize prevention, safety and occupational health. Occupational Health Nursing is defined as a nursing specialty that addresses the health status of individuals in their relationship with the workplace, in order to achieve the highest level of physical, mental and social well-being of the working population, taking into account the individual characteristics of the worker, the job and the socio-labour environment in which they develop. Occupational Health Nursing undertakes its basic functions through the surveillance of workers’ health, and constitutes, beside Occupational Medicine, the basic health unit, which in turn is part of the prevention services of both public and private companies. Today there are about 9,000 specialists in Occupational Health Nursing in Spain, an insufficient number to guarantee the prevention of accidents at work and occupational diseases, the early detection of occupational pathology, the promotion of health through modification of lifestyles and the improvement of the well-being of the Spanish working population. Occupational Health Nursing is aware of the challenges that it must face in the coming years and therefore, it relies on competences as fundamental as teaching, management and research to integrate into interdisciplinary projects in occupational health that provide solutions to increasingly complex health and safety problems at work
